One of the most challenging installations for tile is as a deck or patio over occupied space.  The installation must have the characteristics of both a floor and roof.  As a result, the Tile Council of North America (TCNA) developed Handbook Method F103B to address this situation with a “Drainage Mat” approach.

MAPEI’s is pleased to announce that by combining our traditional tile and stone products with our waterproofing products we are able to offer a complete single source solution for this complicated application. This solves many of the problems that can result from mixing and matching various products from multiple manufacturers.

Performance – MAPEI has earned your trust in developing the best tile installation products.  That same commitment to excellence is shared by MAPEI’s Waterproofing Division.  The Mapethene waterproofing system along with Mapedrain, a pre-fabricated drainage composite, can be used on concrete roof decks, plaza decks and concrete or wood frame balconies under a tile system to protect the building structure from moisture intrusion.

Efflorescence and Water Control –A common concern with deck installations is the presence of moisture, which can pull minerals to the surface of Portland-cement based products; resulting in efflorescence. By combining tile installation products that will not contribute to efflorescence (such as Granirapid System and Ultracolor Plus FA) with waterproofing products (such as Mapethene HT or Mapethene LT and Mapedrain) that do not allow moisture into the building structure, one can mitigate this risk; ensuring not only the long term performance of the structure, but its aesthetics as well.

Warranties – Multiple products from multiple manufacturers can mean trouble and finger-pointing if a warranty issue arises.  MAPEI, however, offers Single-Source System Warranties for products included in the method described in MF103B. In addition to the confidence that utilizing an industry standard method provides, this procedure also saves time and reduces liability for the installing contractor.

Tile products that are listed in the Method are based on performance criteria that have been established by the TCNA; which is determined by the description and usage of the method.  The Waterproofing products listed use industry standard ASTM test methods to verify their performance.

Assistance - MAPEI's Waterproofing and Architectural support can discuss your specific requirements with you and prepare custom CAD details and specifications to address your roof deck or balcony installation. Harold Hays, our MAPEI Technical Services Manager for Waterproofing, has over 35 years of experience in the construction industry, specific to primary waterproofing systems for roof decks.

With this system approach to industry standard recommendations it is much easier for the Design Professional to specify the appropriate products.  Because the name on the bag is MAPEI, you know these products have the level of performance required to ensure a permanent, problem free installation.
