Mapei is taking part at the 41st edition of MCE – the Mostra Convegno Expocomfort exhibition, the two-yearly event dedicated to the civil and industrial HVAC-R and renewable energy sectors, with a host of solutions for refurbishment work and new installations in residential, public and industrial environments aimed at installers and designers of plant and service equipment: self-levelling compounds and mortars used in the installation of heating systems, acoustic insulation systems, waterproofing products for damp areas and bathrooms, binders and complementary products for installing pipework and sanitary ware and, lastly, external thermal insulation systems for buildings.
Mapei has always been highly focused on the environment and on the health of users of its products and users of the areas where they are applied and certifies its branded products with very low emission of volatile organic compounds with the EMICODE EC 1 R PLUS mark issued by GEV.
Mapei has also introduced a series of EPD’s (Environmental Product Declarations), “identity cards” which document the environmental performance properties of a product during its entire life cycle, much requested by architects and designers to help get a clearer understanding of the sustainability characteristics of a product and its impact on the environment.
Mapei’s highly efficient production system also plays a part in safeguarding the environment. This has been achieved by implementing a responsible management approach to the entire production system, from the procurement of raw materials right up to the disposal of waste.
Mapei will have its own team of engineers available at Expocomfort for visitors interested in getting a deeper insight into the Mapei solutions for the BIM design approach (Building Information Modelling). Mapei BIM articles may be integrated into projects for new builds and repair work on existing buildings and cover all the various areas of a building, from the foundations right up to the roof, and may be used both internally and externally.
1. MAPEI FOR REFURBISHMENT WORK ON EXISTING HEATED FLOORS IN THE PRIVATE AND PUBLIC BUILDING SECTORS
In the civil building sector, thin heating systems represent an interesting solution in refurbishment work. For these types of interventions, Mapei proposes NOVOPLAN MAXI fibre-reinforced cementitious levelling mortar, a hi-flow product which hardens rapidly and has a thermal conductivity coefficient of λ = 1.727 W/mK. It has been specifically developed for embedding underfloor heating and cooling systems in layers from 3 to 40 mm thick. NOVOPLAN MAXI forms a complete, perfect shell around pipework and heating elements to guarantee that supports levelled off with this product have high thermal efficiency and low inertia. Heating systems levelled over with NOVOPLAN MAXI are suitable for installing ceramic, natural stone and pre-finished wooden flooring.
When installing flooring, it is recommended to include a soundproofing system to reduce the transmission of noise caused by footsteps. Mapei proposes MAPESONIC CR to improve acoustic insulation without having to remove the old flooring and underlying screed. It is a thin soundproofing membrane supplied in sheet form made from rubber and cork and is applied over cementitious substrates, once they have been prepared according to specification, before installing ceramic, stone, resilient and laminated wooden flooring. MAPESONIC CR may also be applied over existing ceramic and stone flooring, as long as it is well bonded to the substrate and cleaned thoroughly to remove all traces of grease, oil, wax and varnish.
1.2 MAPEI FOR THE INSTALLATION OF NEW FLOORING IN THE PRIVATE AND PUBLIC BUILDING SECTORS
To form new heated screeds Mapei has developed TOPCEM PRONTO, a ready-mixed, ready-to-use mortar which sets normally and hardens rapidly and has a thermal conductivity coefficient of λ = 2.0 W/mK. It is recommended for both floating and bonded screeds for the quick installation of flooring in ceramic (after 24 hours), natural stone (after 48 hours) and PVC, linoleum, rubber and wood (after 4 days). Once the product has been mixed and applied, screeds show no signs of serious cracking, even if there is a large pitch between separation joints. Screeds made from TOPCEM PRONTO are classified CT – C30 – F6 –A1 fl in compliance with Euronorm EN 13813.
To create acoustic insulation systems to combat impact noise in new builds Mapei proposes MAPESILENT®. This is an insulating system in sheets or panels and various accessory items for floating screeds which is applied before installing all types of ceramic, stone, resilient, textile or wooden flooring. The MAPESILENT® system allows the legal limits imposed by the Italian Executive Prime Ministerial Decree D.P.C.M. 5-12-97 to be complied with and reaches the highest acoustic performance classes (Class I and Class II) contemplated by the technical standard UNI 11367 - “Acoustic classification of buildings”.
1.3 MAPEI FOR FLOORING IN INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENTS
Energy efficiency is becoming an increasingly important requirement in the industrial sector, particularly for those sectors with high levels of energy consumption.
In order to create large spreads of industrial flooring where high dimensional stability is required, Mapei proposes MAPECRETE SYSTEM, a system made up of three different admixtures which, when combined together and with concrete, forms floors that have no shrinkage cracks, reduces weak spots, improves their durability and extends the service life of structures. MAPECRETE SYSTEM allows the number of shrinkage joints to be reduced and, in certain cases, for them to be completely eliminated, so that shrinkage cracks, one of the major causes of the deterioration of industrial floors, can be contained.
DYNAMON FLOOR is a range of super-plasticising acrylic-based admixtures for high quality concrete floors with excellent mechanical characteristics. Super-plasticising admixtures from the DYNAMON FLOOR family guarantee high fluidity while considerably accelerating the setting and hardening times of concrete. Concrete admixed with DYNAMON FLOOR guarantees a relatively high level of thermal conductivity and pipework for heating and cooling systems is completely embedded.
A very useful complementary product that improves the mechanical properties of concrete is MAPEFIBRE ST30. These are polymer structural fibres added to concrete when installing compact industrial floors. The fibres have two main functions: to make concrete stronger and improve its tensile strength during the post-cracking phase caused by hygrometric shrinkage.
2. WATERPROOFING SYSTEMS FOR THE PRIVATE AND PUBLIC BUILDING SECTORS
Mapei’s consolidated experience in the waterproofing sector enables the Company to propose high performance technologies and systems for all areas of use in both the residential and public building sectors: showers, bathrooms, damp environments such as saunas and spas, and areas that need to be cleaned frequently.
At MCE, Mapei is bringing MAPEGUM WPS and MAPELASTIC AQUADEFENSE, two ready-to-use, liquid elastic membranes that dry quickly which are used to waterproof the surface of floors and walls. MAPEGUM WPS is for internal use only, whereas MAPELASTIC AQUADEFENSE has been developed to waterproof both internal and external floors and walls, and it is for this reason it is recommended for waterproofing balconies and terraces. Once dry, both types of membrane form an elastic sheath that withstands normal levels of movement from expansion and shrinkage caused by temperature variations and vibrations and provide an excellent grip for adhesives used to install all types of ceramic, stone and mosaics.
3. MORTARS, SEALANTS AND POLYURETAHNE FOAMS FOR ANCHORING PIPEWORK AND SANITARY WARE
LAMPOCEM is a ready-mixed powdered binder made from high strength cement and special additives used to install sanitary ware, anchor pipework and hinges rapidly in place and to seal concrete pipework, sewers and cisterns. It sets and hardens rapidly and, once dry, has high mechanical properties, low rates of shrinkage and maintains its performance properties for a very long time.
To complete the installation of sanitary ware is the range of MAPEPUR one-component, self-expanding polyurethane foams used to fill, seal and insulate gaps and breaks and bond encased electrical equipment. They are also recommended for the thermal and acoustic insulation of pipework for heating, plumbing, air-conditioning and refrigeration systems. Once hardened, these polyurethane foams form a mass which is both insulating and adhesive and which is also both light and stable with excellent mechanical properties.
MAPESIL AC is a pure, acetic silicone sealant which is also resistant to mould thanks to the use of Mapei’s BioBlock® technology and is used for sealing various types of building elements. It is proposed at MCE as a sealant for washbasins, showers, bathtubs and sanitary ware systems.
4. EXTERNAL THERMAL INSULATION FOR BUILDINGS
The MAPETHERM SYSTEM is Mapei’s proposal to increase the energy efficiency of buildings and improve living comfort. Four systems for various types of intervention. MAPETHERM SYSTEM, the external thermal insulation system with European ETA approval and its own dedicated EPD, excels for its intelligent use of adhesive, the key component and the result of Mapei’s world leadership in the adhesives sector. MAPETHERM FLEX RP is an elastic, impact-resistant skimming compound used to form cutting-edge external thermal insulation and to carry out the refurbishment of old external thermal insulation damaged by the rigours of time and bad weather. MAPETHERM AR1 LIGHT is a cementitious adhesive mortar developed by Mapei for application in thick layers. MAPETHERM TILE SYSTEM is the system used for installing ceramic tiles and engineered stone on insulating panels.
